Winter/Spring Adult Sunday School

The Gospel in Hymns led by Dan Rothwell

Starting Jan. 8, 2012 in Fellowship Hall 9:30 to 10:30 am.

We will examine the unique place that hymns have played in the Protestant Churches of the United States. Each week will feature at least one inspirational story of a hymn writer and the historical setting of his or her hymns. Each week we will also review the text of several hymns to show how Protestant churches used hymns to teach theology, in the same way Catholic churches have used statues and stained glass and Orthodox churches used iconography. A featured hymn will be sung and another will be presented by special music by solo or small group. While no attempt will be made to produce a history of hymnology, throughout the 12 week class we will learn how hymns inspired the Reformation in Germany, the Methodist revival in England, and the Great Awakening in America and continue to thrill us throughout the Christian Year: at Advent, Christmas. Easter and beyond, and teach us about great Christian themes like the Cross, Creation, Prayer and Praise. Come ready to participate and share your own thoughts on your favorite hymns in group discussion.

A dialogue with the Gospel of Mark led by Larry McKaughan

Starting Jan. 8, 2012 in the Meeting Room, 9:40 - 10:40 am

We will focus on the book of Mark, taking time to savor this Gospel and to consider what it means (from Mark's vantage) for Jesus to be the Messiah and what it means for us to be part of the Messiah's community.
Mark has two different (overlapping) ways of presenting this to us. In the first half of the book we learn primarily by watching Jesus, learning almost by inference from his actions and sayings. In the second half of Mark disciples are involved in more direct dialogue with Jesus, with issues and answers involving themselves, and of course Jesus'
example, his death and resurrection. We will take chapters 1-8 winter term, 8-16 spring term.
