Preschoolers (through kindergarten) Christian Education

Seasons of the Spirit. This delightful lectionary-based program tracks with Bible readings most likely to be addressed in worship throughout the week, so children and adults will be exploring the same texts and stories. Seasons invites children to a faith-filled relationship with their loving God through the teachings of Jesus, through explorations of art, music, and storytelling. The year is grouped in seasons, starting this fall with the Season of Creation and continuing into Advent.

Feasting on the Word.  This program follows the Common Lectionary so that children will hear Bible readings in worship and explore them in class time.

Feasting addresses young learners who are exploring the worlds of school and church through learning experiences that proclaim:  You are welcome here!  You belong to God and to this church family!

Children will explore God's Word in ways that engage their senses, their emerging skills in reading and writing, and their need to learn by doing.

Elementary class will meet in the Camel Room, in the education wing.  Time:  11:10 (follows music time) during September

What does it mean to be part of a church family?  At Westminster Presbyterian it means we come together from different places and different lives to learn how much God loves us and how we can extend that love to all of God's creation.

We are a welcoming congregation, and we welcome you to a one-time informal discussion of church life, both in general and at Westminster!  Join us for a great opportunity to explore basic questions and ideas with people who have reared their children at Westminster.

  • Who teaches the children?
  • What sorts of things do they learn?
  • How about adult classes and groups? Parent groups?
  • How do single parents manage being part of a church family?
  • What are church services like here?
  • How does this church practice what it preaches?
  • What if I’ve never or rarely been to church?
  • What happens in youth groups?
  • What’s a Presbyterian? What do Presbyterians believe?

Bring your questions! Call our church office for upcoming dates and times: 541-343-3140.

Westminster welcomes our newest Christian educator, dedicated to our youngest members and their families, Leslie Broome. Leslie is a 2010 graduate of Northwest Christian University in Christian Education, with an emphasis on youth and children. Leslie has taught Sunday School for five years, and she interned at Norkenzie Christian Church, her home church, in their Children’s Ministry program. During her college time she worked with NWC’s campus chaplain and worked on speaker programs for the university. In Westminster’s program, Leslie has been organizing resources, planning lessons, and instituting a Bible verse memorizing program for the children. Children and families ended summer with an outdoor ice cream social in August, and a parents'-night-out children's Christmas party at the church is in the works.

Nichole Roy is entering her second year as assistant in Westminster’s preschool Christian education program. Nichole is an education major at the University in Oregon. She started attending Westminster while in high school. She is experienced in lesson and activity planning and loves to come up with ideas for helping the children explore Christian learning in meaningful and memorable ways. Nichole has been working with Leslie on organizing resources and creating summer lesson plans for Westminster.

Come meet Leslie and Nichole soon in Westminster’s education wing. Adult volunteer assistants are always welcome!

Winter/Spring Adult Sunday School

The Gospel in Hymns led by Dan Rothwell

Starting Jan. 8, 2012 in Fellowship Hall 9:30 to 10:30 am.

We will examine the unique place that hymns have played in the Protestant Churches of the United States. Each week will feature at least one inspirational story of a hymn writer and the historical setting of his or her hymns. Each week we will also review the text of several hymns to show how Protestant churches used hymns to teach theology, in the same way Catholic churches have used statues and stained glass and Orthodox churches used iconography. A featured hymn will be sung and another will be presented by special music by solo or small group. While no attempt will be made to produce a history of hymnology, throughout the 12 week class we will learn how hymns inspired the Reformation in Germany, the Methodist revival in England, and the Great Awakening in America and continue to thrill us throughout the Christian Year: at Advent, Christmas. Easter and beyond, and teach us about great Christian themes like the Cross, Creation, Prayer and Praise. Come ready to participate and share your own thoughts on your favorite hymns in group discussion.

A dialogue with the Gospel of Mark led by Larry McKaughan

Starting Jan. 8, 2012 in the Meeting Room, 9:40 - 10:40 am

We will focus on the book of Mark, taking time to savor this Gospel and to consider what it means (from Mark's vantage) for Jesus to be the Messiah and what it means for us to be part of the Messiah's community.
Mark has two different (overlapping) ways of presenting this to us. In the first half of the book we learn primarily by watching Jesus, learning almost by inference from his actions and sayings. In the second half of Mark disciples are involved in more direct dialogue with Jesus, with issues and answers involving themselves, and of course Jesus'
example, his death and resurrection. We will take chapters 1-8 winter term, 8-16 spring term.
